Nursing School in California
If you choose to attend a nursing school in California, you should be aware of the fact that there are three types of pre-licensure registered nursing programs available, as well as two alternative routes to become an RN.
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) – Takes approximately 2-3 years. This program is offered at nursing schools in Los Angeles California as well as at many community colleges. This course prepares you to become a registered nurse (RN) and provide nursing care in various settings.
Nursing School in California Degrees
Attending a nursing school in California will provide you with one of the following degrees upon the completion of required courses:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) - this program typically takes 4 years. Sometimes it is also referred to as Baccalaureate degree. This degree is offered at many school for nursing in California as well as by California State Universities and some private schools. This program prepares you to provide nursing care in various settings as well as a potential for administrative and leadership positions.
LVN 30 Unit Option – Designed as a career path for California Licensed Vocational Nurses who wish to become registered nurses. This program takes around 18-24 months. A certificate of completion is granted, but no degree is received upon completion of the course. Some states do not recognize California’s LVN 30 Unit Option and may not issue RN licenses to those with the LVNs. Most ADN programs, however, will give LVNs credits for the coursework they have completed while becoming an LVN at one of the certified nursing schools in California.
Masters Entry Level Program in Nursing – is designed for adults who have a bachelor’s degree in a different field and wish to become an RN. This program takes approximately 1-2 years, and the graduates receive a masters degree upon completion of the courses.
Military Corpsmen – California law allowes military corpsmen to participate in the national RN licensure examination if they had completed minimal RN level education requirements and clinical practice.
